Emma Sackett, 1898

Emma Sackett, My Great Great Grandmother, was a nurse in the civil war. She contributed to a book in 1895 with Clara Barton about her experiences in the war, excerpted below.
Having a desire to minister to the needs of our suffering soldiers, I went from Denmark, Iowa,to Chicago,in company with Mrs.Colton, and reported to Mrs. Livermore, not knowing whether we should be sent to the front amid the battlefields, or where our lot would be cast.

The Winterset Madisonian, Wednesday, November 7, 1917 Golden sunshine, golden wishes and golden gifts poured upon the Sackett home on Tuesday, November 6th, in celebration of the golden wedding anniversary of George Cassander Sackett and Emma Arthusa French. A family dinner was given at the noon hour, followed by a reception for friends during the afternoon.

Today I am living in the dim and hazy past, as I reread the treasured letters received in time of the Civil War. While there is such of sadness, there is great interest in reviewing those days of fifty years ago, when our country was in a turmoil in every part, when friend and foe were on every hand.

Lodema Sackett, my fourth great aunt, lived from 1788 to 1889 in Ohio. She was interviewed in 1887 about being a school teacher.
In 1817, the “north” school was built on the farm of Judge William Eyles on Akron Road. Other teachers at this time included Sherman Loomis and his wife, Lodema Sackett Loomis, Captain George Lyman, Lemuel North and John Nesmith.
